The Shipyard Museum

Mobile installations bring the history of Elsinore Shipyard into the urban space

The characteristic overalls. The penetrating sound of the shipyard whistle. The smell of oil. Hammering. The bank. Noise and pride. From 1882 to 1983, the shipyard in Elsinore was the city's social and economic pulse. During the 100 years the shipyard operated, approximately 425 ships were built. The shipyard was, and is, thus part of Elsinore's history and identity. Now it is also brought to life in the urban space through two mobile installations at the city center Axeltorv and at the Shipyard Museum. This is what Nicolai Juel Vædele said at the inauguration of the urban space installations:

“When Mads Holm founded Elsinore Shipyard and Machine Building in 1882, Elsinore had an industrial breakthrough as one of Denmark's largest and most significant shipyard towns. The new installations will partly make this history visible in the urban space - but also the history of the whole of Denmark as a shipbuilding nation.“

- Nicolai Juel Vædele, museum inspector in Elsinore Municipality.

STORYTELLERS WITH A VOICE FROM THE YARD

The installations connect Elsinore's maritime history and identity. From the statue of Erik of Pomerania, who introduced the toll on Axeltorv, to the old shipyard, where the ship's propeller helped to revolutionize the way shipping was conducted. Now a physical connection has been created between the city center on Axeltorv and the Shipyard Museum, which will be the entire Danish Shipyard Museum. - Christian Holm Donatzky, member of Elsinore City Council and chairman of the City, - Planning and Environment Committee. The StoryTeller, which stands on Axeltorv, points further out into the city for experiences at the Shipyard Museum. It is the former shipyard worker, and now dedicated volunteer tour guide at the museum, Ole Jens Nielsen, who has written and spoken the speaks!

90,000 ACTIVATIONS IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS

Once again, the small museum - the Shipyard Museum in Elsinore - has managed to tell the 100 years of history in a new and innovative way.

“It is important for us to choose different communication techniques that fit our goal and that require very limited maintenance. We've been testing StoryTellers for a year now and we can see that it works. Therefore, it is obvious for us to expand with more installations and expand to the entire shipyard area.”

- Frederikke Thyme Heick, Mediator at Elsinore Municipality
